Pros Playing with Hickory Clubs

Ever wonder how today’s pros would do playing with equipment from 100 years ago?  Of course not, but here is the answer anyway.

I saw this on GolfDigest.com where Danny Willett, Lee Westwood, and Miguel Angel Jimenez played at two-hole “Hickory Challenge” prior to the European Masters. They played with hickory-shafted clubs and dressed the part too.  I believe they were using modern golf balls, but I may be mistaken on that.

Here is a video of the event posted on the European Tour’s twitter feed.

Here is a protracer of their tee shots.

I think this only proves that Bobby Jones is the best player of all time.

Australian Curtis Luck Wins 116th U.S. Amateur

Curtis Luck won the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship with a 6&4 victory over Brad Dalke.

Here are some highlights from the USGA’s twitter account:

According to Golf Central (which I am watching as I post this), Luck was planning on turning pro, but will instead remain an amateur to play in all of the events (like the Masters) he just qualified for by winning the U.S. Amateur. Can you blame him??

Inbee Park Wins Gold at Olympics

Inbee Park returned from injury to win the Women’s Olympic Golf gold medal running away from the field to a five-shot win over Lydia Ko. Shanshan Feng finished one behind Ko for bronze.

Inbee’s score of -16 was also the same as was shot by the men’s gold medal winner, Justin Rose.

Here is Inbee’s final putt to win the gold:

Here are the medalists showing off their new jewellery:

Here are the top three finishers with their new bling:

I watched a fair bit of the coverage, and something was definitely lacking. I think they need to update the format, and have more on-course reporters (only have the two commentators who talked way too much only added to the ennui).  Also, keep us updated on the leaderboard and when you bring up a players score or their shot details, tell us what place they are currently in.

The course did look pretty impressive.

Congrats to all of the Olympic golf competitors, I hope you all enjoyed your Olympic experience.

Jim Furyk Shoots First 58 on PGA Tour

Jim Furyk shot a final-round 58 at the Travelers Championship. Despite posting 10(!) birdies and an eagle, Furyk finished in 5th place, three shots behind winner Russell Knox.

Here is Furyk’s scorecard.

I’ve shot worse playing mini-golf.

Apparently this soon-to-be legendary round was almost a footnote, as Miguel Carballo, the other half of the Sunday pairing, accidently marked Furyk down for a birdie on the 14th.  The scoring error was caught before the card was signed (always double check all of the scores on your card).

Here are some of the highlights from the round, from the PGATour’s YouTube page.
