Best Calls At The Masters

My two favourite calls from The Masters both came from Verne Lundquist.  I looked all over YouTube for them and this is as good as I could find (most clips either had some other commentary or lame music over the actual audio). The clip is from the TSN SportCenter Top 10 Masters Moments back a few years ago, with an obvious Canadian bias as Mike Weir’s 2003 win was number 1.

The key calls are numbers 3 (Tiger’s chip-in on 16 back in 2005 with the “In your life…” call) and  2 (Jack Nicklaus in 1986 on 17’s “Yes Sir!”).

Bonus for number 5 when Tiger completes his “Tiger Slam”, winning all four major titles in a row, and you can hear Ken Venturi say what will be true forever, “Something I dreamt I would never see and I thought that no one would ever do”.

2015 Drive, Putt & Chip

What has already become a great golf tradition (in only its second year) is the Drive, Putt & Chip competition.

Eighty junior golfers get to compete in the national finals at Augusta National. How much do I wish that I could be 10 years old again, or have a 10 year old kid?

This is such a great event.  Watching all of these kids who are so talented, and also living a dream to get onto the grounds at Augusta, and getting to putt that famous putt on 18 (from where Mark O’Meara won in 1998 and Phil Mickelson won in 2004). And they all seem to be pulling for each other to do well.

And it is also great seeing some of the Masters champions and other players on-hand to watch the event.  Nick Faldo, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal,, Bubba Watson, and Brandt Snedeker were all there when I was watching.

As you can see from the results of the breakdown, the key to winning  is the chipping and putting (much like in the rest of the game of golf). Except for Morgan Goldstein who won each event in her division.

Golf Fix: Sheffield adds 25 yards with impact tip

With baseball season about to begin, former MLB power-hitter Gary Sheffield was on the Golf Fix and got a lesson from Michael Breed.  I guess it was a good lesson as Sheffield was instantly hitting his 7-iron 25 yards further.

Michael didn’t do a great job explaining this one, but I think Gary was just swinging with his arms and not utilizing his legs, hips, and shoulders (seeing his swing before the tip would have helped).  Anyways, use your lower body to generate more clubhead speed.

EA Sports Puts McIlroy on Cover of PGA Tour Game

I think every golfer who ever owned a video game console has played EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour at some point.  After a couple of years of not producing a golf game, the Tiger Woods era is officially over as EA Sports is back with EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

Here is their trailer for the new game.

I always liked playing the Tiger Woods golf games, it was fun shooting -10 or better every round of golf.  I think my best score was -18 (56), but I can’t remember which course (maybe Pebble?).

Club Path Drills to Stop Slicing the Golf Ball

I saw this on the Golf Channel about a week ago and thought it was pretty interesting, and today I see they have posted the clip.  This could help instill the proper feeling of not coming-over-the-top and allow many golfers the proper feedback to get the club on the right path.

McIlroy throws 3 iron into lake at Doral

In the second round at Doral, Rory McIlroy hit his second shot on the par-5 8th hole into the water. After a brief pause, he decided the club should follow his ball to a watery grave, helicoptering it well out into the lake. Rory bogeyed the hole on his way to a 2-under round of 70.

In the third round, NBC coverage showed a diver recovering the club, while they also said that Marcel Siem also lost/tossed a club in the same lake.

I can’t say I have ever tossed a club in that manner (usually it’s just a light toss back towards my bag/cart), although I have played with plenty of club tossers. Often the offending clubs end up caught in trees.

Remember kids, take Tommy Bolt’s advice (I think it was Tommy Bolt) and throw your clubs down the fairway, as it make it easier to pick them up and doesn’t hold up play.
