U.S. Wins 2016 Ryder Cup 17-11 Over Europe

The U.S. has won the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008 (which was also at Hazeltine), defeating the Europe team by a score of 17-11.

There were a couple of “matches of the day”.  The first match of the day between Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy set the tone for the matches.  Both Reed and McIlroy seemed to be playing a shot-making game of “top this” which drove the crowd into a frenzy, never more-so than on the exchange on the 8th hole.

Here is the scorecard for the Reed/McIlroy match which was won by Reed, 1-up:

The other “match of the day” was between Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.  Mickelson had 10 birdies, and Garcia put up 9 birdies of his own.  It was only right that this match was halved.

I will post highlights of this match when I find some, until then, here is the scorecard:

Fan Makes Putt at Ryder Cup Practice Round

A fan at the Ryder Cup practice rounds called out the Andy Sullivan and Rory McIlroy, saying that he could make the putt they missed.  Here is a tweet of what happened when they asked him to show them how it was done.

2016 Ryder Cup Teams (So Far)

Here are the 2016 Ryder Cup teams so far.  Why does the U.S. get to wait until September 25th to make their final pick?  Once the teams are finalized, we will see how they stack up against each other using our Power Rankings.

And here is the US Team so far.

Pros Playing with Hickory Clubs

Ever wonder how today’s pros would do playing with equipment from 100 years ago?  Of course not, but here is the answer anyway.

I saw this on GolfDigest.com where Danny Willett, Lee Westwood, and Miguel Angel Jimenez played at two-hole “Hickory Challenge” prior to the European Masters. They played with hickory-shafted clubs and dressed the part too.  I believe they were using modern golf balls, but I may be mistaken on that.

Here is a video of the event posted on the European Tour’s twitter feed.

Here is a protracer of their tee shots.

I think this only proves that Bobby Jones is the best player of all time.

Australian Curtis Luck Wins 116th U.S. Amateur

Curtis Luck won the 116th U.S. Amateur Championship with a 6&4 victory over Brad Dalke.

Here are some highlights from the USGA’s twitter account:

According to Golf Central (which I am watching as I post this), Luck was planning on turning pro, but will instead remain an amateur to play in all of the events (like the Masters) he just qualified for by winning the U.S. Amateur. Can you blame him??
