Registration for 2017 Drive, Chip & Putt Championship

In the daily e-mail from GolfChannel.com, there was a link to register for the 2017 Drive, Chip & Putt Championship.  The national finals are held at Augusta National the Sunday prior to the Masters, and is a lot of fun to watch.

The 2017 Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is open to boys and girls ages 7-15. Boys and girls will compete in separate divisions in four age categories: 7-9 years old; 10-11 years old; 12-13 years old; and 14-15 years old.

These kids are really good.  Here are the 2016 Finalists that we will be seeing at this year’s tournament.

Here are the results from 2015 and here are some highlights from the past championships.

A Couple of Serious Beards on the Sony Open

While watching the Sony Open I noticed a couple of players were sporting impressive facial hair.  I decided to go looking for pictures of them, and when I googled it up I found the Golf Channel already had an article on “Fear the Beard“.

The article references a couple of pictures tweeted out by Dave Shedloski. Here they are:

The tweets are listed out of order, but being Canadian I felt it was only right to put DeLaet’s beard first.

ftw.usatoday.com had a story (or posted a tweet) about the 2016 British Open course, Royal Troon, being covered in snow.

Here is the original tweet.

Yahoo Not Offering Fantasy Golf in 2016

As 2015 is winding down I was thinking I should get a head start on setting up my Yahoo Fantasy Golf Pool for 2016.  I went to the home page for Yahoo Fantasy Golf and found the following:

Capture

This is very disappointing, as I thought Yahoo did a great job with their Fantasy Golf.

I guess I will have to find another golf fantasy pool to play in for 2016.  Please comment if you have any suggestions.

UPDATE – Yahoo has changed their minds and is going to offer fantasy golf for 2016.

2015 Drive, Putt & Chip

What has already become a great golf tradition (in only its second year) is the Drive, Putt & Chip competition.

Eighty junior golfers get to compete in the national finals at Augusta National. How much do I wish that I could be 10 years old again, or have a 10 year old kid?

This is such a great event.  Watching all of these kids who are so talented, and also living a dream to get onto the grounds at Augusta, and getting to putt that famous putt on 18 (from where Mark O’Meara won in 1998 and Phil Mickelson won in 2004). And they all seem to be pulling for each other to do well.

And it is also great seeing some of the Masters champions and other players on-hand to watch the event.  Nick Faldo, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal,, Bubba Watson, and Brandt Snedeker were all there when I was watching.

Here are the winners from 2015

Division Winner Points (D-C-P)
 Boys 7-9  Jay Leng Jr  22 (2-10-10)
 Girls 7-9  Effie Perakis  22 (5-8-9)
Boys 10-11 Jake Peacock 26 (8-9-9)
Girls 10-11 Lydia Swan 25 (6-10-9)
Boys 12-13 George Duangmanee 20 (9-5-6) (in playoff)
Girls 12-13 Morgan Goldstein 30 (10-10-10)
Boys 14-15 Toby Wilson 21.5 (1.5-10-10)
Girls 14-15 Alexandra Swayne 21 (3-9-9)

As you can see from the results of the breakdown, the key to winning  is the chipping and putting (much like in the rest of the game of golf). Except for Morgan Goldstein who won each event in her division.
