Unfortunately, once again I did not see very much golf this past weekend. I did see Angel Cabrera hole out a 8-iron from 176 yards(!) on the 13th hole that pretty much clinched his victory at the Greenbrier Classic.
And Graeme McDowell played great (and Kevin Stadler struggled) in capturing the French Open.
With the wins, Cabrera moved to 40th (from 242) and McDowell climbed 66 spots to 15th in our Power Rankings.
A little note about Kevin Stadler. I met Kevin when he was 13 when and a camper at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club‘s youth camp, and I was his councillor. He looks pretty much the same today as he did then, and he was an excellent player then too.
One night Kevin and his friends were running around the lodge at about 1am still, and I figured if they had so much energy the could run up and down the hill for the South Tee of the practice range (located next to the lodge). So there they were, running about 150 feet up and down a steep grade a 1am. The next day was “send a post card home” day. The facility manager asked me what was going on with my group, as they all said they had a crazy councillor that made them to running in the middle of the night. I thought I might be in trouble, but the manager said the staff all thought it was funny and a great idea.
I have seen Kevin play in person (at the Memorial) but was not able to talk to him and see if he remembers the guy that made him run the hills in the middle of the night.
And now for Butch Harmon’s advice for amateurs. I don’t know if it’s great advice, but it is good advice.
I guess I need to buy a hybrid to replace my 3-iron.
